December 2007 Entries

I am off to Austria very soon but I am fan of the Nevis range.  This morning when looking at the new live web cams it looks very disappointing :-S.

Cairngorms

The news isn't all bad.  If you keep checking out http://ski.visitscotland.com for the latest updates on the other resorts.  Cairngorm looks decent as they posted an update http://www.cairngormmountain.co.uk/news/77 outlining fresh snow and conditions.

Glencoe

It looks like Glencoe isn't open....http://glencoemountain.com

If you manage to get up north for some of the powder have a fantastic time.

Well it's not too far away now.  Things are going to get a little hectic so before I forget

Merry Christmas

Finally got some time to put this mix together.

Funky house podcast. Merry Christmas - Episode 4

Dalgety Bay Merry ChristmasEvery year during the festive season a family in Dalgety Bay decorate their house to the MAX.  Now this isn't a light here and there, this is the full monty.  In fact Scottish Power dedicate a sub station just to that house :P

There are donation boxes situated around the house and all proceeds go to Childrens hospice.

If you're traveling through Dalgety Bay at any time then makes sure you do a quick pit stop and donate some cash.

I have been "tweaking" subtext  so that I could add in more options into my site sections(see top right).  While these are only anchor tags that show the appropriate "block" I thought it would be helpful rather than scrolling down all the time.  I have also added an IP block http module that blocks IP addresses be it an individual address or a range (don't ask).  I have also been playing about with a nice little logo, tell me what you think.

I do have a couple of ideas that I would like to implement into subtext but until the next release is out thought I would wait.

On the next release I plan on re-writing my skin(while finishing off my skin articles) and a couple of others while I have some spare time.   I am just hoping the new release is out in the next 2 weeks....

If you would like to know about subtext or you would like to help the community please find below some links that will point you in the right direction.

Powered by subtext logo

A while back you may remember that I posted an item Biggest iPod to date.  After posting the problem I was experiencing in the forums over at apple it would appear that my machine was confusing my iPod with a network drive.  After reading the article it all fell into place however what I was more confused about was where my iPod was getting its name from.  It's still not known but I am glad to have control over my iPod again.

This leads me on to the following articles that were posted a couple of days ago over at lifehacker.

I think I have gone down the iTunes road without thinking there were other routes to my destination.  After reading through those articles it would seem there are some cool tools out there that make life a little easier when it comes to iPod management may it be putting music/video's on or taking them off.

I have downloaded and installed a couple of the utilities mention in the above links and to be fare I think it's still a little early to give my opinion on the software, but so far it's all good.

It's been a while since I wrote my 1st article about subtext skins and unfortunately I have to start re-writing 2 and 3 as my laptop drive decided to go Pete Tong on me.  Learn from events like this so now I use BT Vault for my main files and anything I buy from iTunes is backed up on another 2 hard drives....  I am off work in a couple of weeks so my plan is to catch up with my subtext skin articles and re-write my current skin :)

I have been looking at converting some of the themes out there over to subtext and while converting one I remembered an email that Phil Haack sent in relation to the homepage.ascx control and the viewpost.ascx control.  Most of the themes currently available don't take advantage of these controls as most people want a constant look and feel throughout their site so just use the pagetemplate.ascx.

Homepage Control.

Ok so I think lets start a fresh lets remove the DayCollection control and add in some general text.  I add in a header 2 and a paragraph of text, refresh my homepage and "Server Error - object not set to an instance of an object".  I add back the DayCollection control set the "visible" attribute to false and we have a winner....

homepage1

Now I am thinking why is the page breaking when I remove the DayCollection control?  The reason is :

Within the HomePage onLoad event

HomePageDays.Days = Entries.GetHomePageEntries(Config.CurrentBlog.ItemCount);

The application falls over due to the DayCollection Control "Daylist" not being on the page, possible bug?  In this case we don't want to show all our posts on the page like normal, so we set the display of the control to false.

Ok so what else can we do in the Homepage control?   We could make it a general introduction page, remove the recent posts from the side bar and put them in the central area...

How do we do this?  It's very straight forward.  Firstly I set the recent posts usercontrol within the pagetemplate.ascx to false and then I changed the Homepage.ascx control to:

   1: <%@ Control Language="C#" EnableTheming="false" AutoEventWireup="false" Inherits="Subtext.Web.UI.Controls.HomePage" %>
   2: <%@ Register TagPrefix="uc1" TagName="DayCollection" Src="DayCollection.ascx" %>
   3: <%@ Register TagPrefix="uc1" TagName="RecentPosts" Src="RecentPosts.ascx" %>
   4: <uc1:DayCollection id="HomePageDays" runat="server" visible="false"></uc1:DayCollection>
   5: <h2>Welcome to my website</h2>
6: <p>I have been trying to work out how to get the homepage.ascx control to work so that my homepage
looks different from other pages</p>
   7: <img src="imagesdirectory/simon.jpg" alt="simon" />
   8: <uc1:RecentPosts id="RecentPosts1" runat="server" />

 The outcome....

homepage2

With this change some css modifications would be needed for example the un-ordered list isn't formatted as it should be(orange square).  We could keep playing about with the homepage control, maybe add in a tag control.  It's there to be played about with so why not....

It's December, it's cold, it's magnificent. Tonight I was astonished by this view.  It's hard to believe that the rail bridge is 118 years old on the 4th of March 2008.

You tube does it again.  A Japanese gameshow where contestants have to pass through some very unusual shapes in a moving wall.

I am going to start off with a link to Amazons rental dvd service as we all know TV can be rather tiresome at Christmas showing the same classics every year.  I have been using Amazons dvd service for about 8 months now and I haven't had one little problem with it.  From when the concept was launched the structure of the pricing plans has changed for the better, well I think anyway, going from limited amount of dvds sent out a month to unlimited, prices starting at £3.99. Why not sign up for the trial what have you got to lose?

We are all doing it, looking about this vast digital gateway known as the Internet for the best deals for Christmas presents.  What if you're struggling for ideas about what to get that special someone or you're just out of ideas?Everyone has normal haunts where to look but I thought I would compile some of the deals I have spotted.

HMV have some fantastic low prices surely something for everyone and another good thing is that it's free delivery :)

If dvds aren't your cuppa tea then why not a couple of books?  Waterstones offering free UK delivery, up to 20% off academic titles, up 50% off selected classics and lots of other offers.

Maybe you'd like to upgrade your PC, buy a new laptop, or even buy some new software.  Is your laptop, PC running slowly, doing random things, do you have an anti-virus product installed?  PC world have some fantastic offers with the ability to order online and collect from store.

I do hope that if anything the above merchants will help you in finding that Christmas present.
